On July 19th, at the ASHA Connect conference in Chicago, Dr. Hamilton presented on reframing our understanding of African American English.
She presented information on how to use different language in order to rethink our understanding of what AAE actually is versus what it isn’t. This shift in thinking aims to assist speech-language pathologists and teachers to reframe their perspective on AAE and AAE-speakers, thus improving their practice and cultural-linguistic competence.
Session attendees not only learned about ways to shift the paradigm of language, in particular AAE, but they also stated that her presentation was “impressive,” “insightful,” and “engaging.”
